AB 24 Targeted Child Tax Credit (Burke) – SUPPORT

The following was sent to our state legislators:

On behalf of the Board of Directors, employees and clients of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, I am writing in support of AB 24 which establishes the Targeted Child Tax Credit (TCTC) to support families and children living in deep poverty by taking into account the basic necessities of a family when issuing a tax credit. We also ask you to support Governor Gavin Newsom’s Fiscal Year 2019-20 Budget proposal that doubles the existing California EITC by investing $1 billion in a new Working Families Tax Credit.

California has one of the highest levels of poverty in the nation. Despite California’s safety net programs, about 450,000 children in our state live in deep poverty. We, therefore, urge your support of a legislative package that we believe will help to mitigate poverty in California.

·        AB 24 (Burke) Supports families and children living in deep poverty by establishing the Targeted Child Tax Credit (TCTC)

·        Governor Gavin Newsom’s 2019-20 Budget proposal that doubles the existing California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) by investing $1 billion in a new Working Families Tax Credit.

Without the federal and state Earned Income Tax Credits, 840,000 more Californians (including 376,000 children) would be in poverty. That is why we are asking you to vote in favor of AB 24 and the Governor’s budget request for the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC).

At Catholic Charities, we aim to break the cycle of generational poverty by disrupting it with opportunity. Our early childhood education, after school, residential, and summer programs embrace each child where they are and expose them to exciting literacy, STEM, and educational opportunities that spark their desire to learn, explore, and grow. For us, every child matters, is deserving of our best efforts, and has the potential to reach astonishing heights no matter what their origins or hardships.
