A child wrenched from her mother’s breast as she nurses. A frightened five-year old being torn from his father’s arms. Hundreds of desperate parents pleading with US border officials to remain with all they have left – their young children. In the name of “homeland security” and fed by ugly political grandstanding and racism, these cruel and coercive separations are playing out now at the behest of our government on the US-Mexico border.
Over the past six weeks, more than 2,000 immigrant children have been forcibly separated from their parents. They are undoubtedly adrift, alone, scared, and traumatized. Their whereabouts unclear and their ability to reconnect with their parents soon – or ever – negligible.
Imagine the fear of a child.
We are deeply troubled by this inhuman treatment. Rather than being a deterrent to immigration, this policy is perverse, callous, and damaging. Not only to the children and their families, but to us as a nation built on tolerance and justice.
Stand with us at Catholic Charities against this ugly and immoral policy of separating children from their parents. We must speak up and act. This is a crime against humanity.
